Weekend Update: Cupcakes Edition

Image
Good Morning, Kittens. And, how was your weekend? Mine? Well, mine was a streak of dullness punctuated by a few bright, shining moments of cupcakery goodness ... I did post once or twice this weekend, so scroll down to have a look-see. There are some new birthday party photos uploaded to Flickr. Some of them are quite funny ... at least to me. So, Saturday, I did some minor cleaning and straightening of the apartment. Then, I went for a run. In the early evening, I ventured into DC for a Coffee Date with this guy I met online. He was nice enough, but I didn't feel like there was any romantic chemistry. After coffee, I stopped by Hello Cupcake to see if they had started making the Sex and the City -themed cupcakes yet. They hadn't. They go on sale today. I should buy some at some point for Tomokito's birthday (May 28th). I went ahead and bought 4 cupcakes anyway. 2 Raspberry Beret (chocolate cupcake with raspberry frosting) and 2 Cookies 'n' Cream (see ph...

All Good Things ...

Good Morning, Kittens. So, Mr. Fantastic and I broke up last night. Rather than go on about all the ways that Mr. Fantastic wasn't quite so fantastic, let's just say that VUBOQ saw this coming about 2 weeks ago (when Mr. Fantastic started acting all weird). And, although VUBOQ wanted to use dinner last night to discuss what was up, Mr. Fantastic thought it would be better to call 30 minutes before he was supposed to arrive, bail on dinner, and break up. OK. I am surprisingly not all that upset. I guess one gets tougher as he gets older. Sort of like steak. Or something. And, we can focus on all the positives that are coming out of it ... Hm ... Lessee ... Oooh. Oooh. I know! *waves hand* I will no longer have to pretend I like Loser Roommate/Best Friend and his equally as loser-y boyfriend. *whew* That is a total load off my mind. I already feel less stress lines appearing. Huzzah! Also ... I did not break the Vow of Alcohol-Free (the Rest of) April and (Most of) M...

Weekend Update: Short Sexy Hair Edition

Image
Good Evening, Kittens. I know! A Sunday Post. What up with that? Well ... other than the fact that I am in Ironing Avoidance Mode *and* that tomorrow is 12 of 12, I had a little time. So, I thought I'd type up a little update. You know how that goes. Friday night was my "alone night" ... I ate guacamole and chips. SCGB came down for a chat. It was fun. Saturday, I blobbed. Like, seriously, blobbed. It was AWESOME. Then, I got ready to go to my friend's Cherry Blossom Party. That was some boozy good times. The party was awesome. Jerry has some wonderful friends, like George the SuperCute, But Unfortunately Straight, Dentist. And, Mark (who as you may recall, I used to date) was there with his new beau. I will be kind (I know! SHOCKING!) and say that he seems like a very nice guy. Of course, because Mark was going to be there, I wore extra cute jeans. Behold! Jealousy Jeans: Haha. See what you're missing, mister? Anyway, I seem to have over-imbibed...

The Final Countdown

Good morning and good news, kittens! It's the last day of Alcohol-Free April ! YAY! AND, we made it with only one teensy little slip ... if only Steve had become a US Citizen in May. Bastard. It's all his fault. I hope the rest of you had a wonderful, wonderful month of no booze as well :-) On the bright side of being booze-free, I will be finishing April about $200 under budget . SUH-weet! I can't remember the last time that happened. I figure I saved so much money because (a) I wasn't drinking (and booze costs a lot) and (b) usually when we go out to happy hour, we end up eating dinner out as well. Dinners out can be 'spensive. So, YAY for me! YAY for being booze-free for (nearly) a month! and SUPERYAY for being under friggin' budget for the first time in (nearly) forever! *pats self on back* The beginning of Return to Booze Month looks like this: May 1 - Casual Martini Gathering at My Abode (tentative) May 2 - Happy Hour in DC (possibly Nellie'...

Weekend Update: Gray Skies Edition

Image
Happy Monday, Kittens! Are you like me and *so* not wanting to be at work today? I hope so! After quite a rocky start here at Harvard , my weekend improved significantly. Steve's Naturalization Party in Way-Out Suburubia was way fun. Perhaps, I'll be posting pictures later (assuming he sends some out). The brief hiatus from Alcohol-Free April was well worth it ... Except for the hangover Sunday morning. So. Painful. Fortunately, the Co-op Board had planned a Yard Work Day, which motivated me (and another slightly hungover co-op resident ) to get off our sofas and do a little yard work. We weeded. Raked. Spread mulch. A good time was had by all. Then, another neighbor (who took pottery this session) and I drove over to the pottery studio to pick up our final pieces for the term. Here's a photo: The rest are on flickr. Go look . In other news, Dad has returned home and seems to be recovering nicely. Thanks for your good thoughts. More later. *smooches* UPDATE: Party Photo St...

Look! A Poll!

Image
Hi, kittens. One of my good friends, Steve (of Steveandbobby fame), recently became a US Citizen. This coming Saturday, I will be attending a party to celebrate his Americanosity. I, of course, will be wearing my Star-Spangled Satin Tights. Anyway, it's a party. There will be booze. And, now, the poll:

Pottery News and the Joys of Scheduling

It would seem that the last bisque firing is going to be on April 21st. This is not good. I still have BUTTLOADS of clay left. Plus, 4 mugs which need trimming and handles. Hopefully, I can get out of work early on Friday, run to the studio (it closes at 5) to trim and pull handles. Then, maybe on Sunday the mugs will be dry enough to put in the kiln on Monday. There will probably not be enough time to throw anything else. GAH. But, I don't want to abandon all my leftover clay, either. *sigh* Looks like I'll be signing up for a summer course ... [which, in and of itself, is not a bad thing ... unless I'm unemployed at that time. Then, it would totally suck and be money that I shouldn't have spent.] The last glaze firing is the 28th. My exciting plans for today after work include: vaccuuming! laundry! and sweeping! OMG! I haz all teh funz. ALL OF IT! I'm also going to eat cheese and olives . Because if I can't have alcohol, at least I can have good...

Good morning, kittens. Yesterday was fun. I jetted out of work at 2:30 to deliver some documents to DC. Then, I walked to Barnes and Noble to make use of some birthday gift cards. I bought this: Mark Bittman's How to Cook Everything Vegetarian ! I'm so excited. I've been wanting this book for AGES. Now, I haz it! Huzzah! I am planning to snuggle up on my sofa this evening with a cup of tea, my kitty, and this book. *woo hoobity hoo* Later, I went to my last [instructor-led] pottery class. We still have a few more sessions to use up clay and finish works-in-progress. I glazed three more things [a vase and two mugs], using a *new* color scheme. I know! You thought I could only glaze things in blue and white. This time I used green and a new brown glaze. We'll see how they turn out. I also threw two more mugs. AND, my faux corningware casserole dish is finished: Tell me it's gorgeous [There are two more photos of it on flickr ]. OH, one more thing ... for those of you...

Mixology

Last night, after folding all my laundry, I invited a few neighbors (DUN, SCGB, Tomokito) down to help me perfect the drink recipe I created for the Helix Lounge Spring/Summer Cocktail Contest . After a little trial and error (and a lot of gin), I think I hit upon a winner. The suckiest thing is that, since it's Alcohol-Free April, I couldn't sample my own creation. Poo. I emailed my recipe to the bar this morning. If you'd like to play along, email me (or leave a comment) and I'll send you the recipe. The drink, which I have dubbed the Blueberry Collins , is a lovely purple color and is YUMMY (or so I am told). And that's all the news that's fit to print. More later. *smooches* PS. Don't forget you only have a few more days to sign up for the 10% Refund Challenge or the Poor Bastages Who Owe the Tax Man Pity Party ! Fun! Prizes! Dogooderyness!

You Have to Pronounce "Major" Like You are Victoria Beckham

Good morning, kittens. Just a few random bits of nothingness to report this gray and dreary morning. Last night was the board meeting. It was good. Prior to the board meeting, we went to Across the Hall from DUN Neighbor's apartment for chili. That was also good. My apartment is a Certified Disaster Zone . When I get home from work, I have to do MAJOR cleaning. MAY-JOR. And laundry. It's laundry day! *w00t* I'm having a few neighbors over tonight. Helix Lounge is hosting a summertime cocktail contest . I have a GREAT idea for a cocktail, but, since it is Alcohol-Free April (Day 437 9), I can't sample my own creation. Thus, the neighbors will be taste-testing guinea pigs*. Hopefully, the cocktail won't be total crap. It sounds good in theory, at least. Here's a fun new blog for everyone to visit: Saving the World Before Bedtime (Check out the superfunkycool spectacles!). Finally, I'm working on a very special weekend post, featuring our favorite Gay Bears,...

Alcohol-Free April, Day One

Last night, I found myself in front of my refrigerator vermouth in one hand, chilled martini glass in the other, when I remembered, "Alcohol-Free April." D-man. It's going to be a long, long month. How did everyone else do ? Last night for dinner, I made a really weird salad, involving mushroom , onions , and chili peppers sauteed in raspberry vinagrette and then served over mixed greens with warm pita. It wasn't bad , but I won't be making it again. Then, DUN, DUN's bf, and SCGB came down for chocolate tofu pie . It tasted a lot better than it did at Y's party. I don't know exactly why. Perhaps because (1) I knew it wasn't going to be sweet and (b) I wasn't distracted by 60 gabillion other choco-choices. Delicious. My plans for today, beside suffering through work, include buying Sweeney Todd on DVD and attacking Mount Laundry. Srsly. Dirty laundry is overtaking my bedroom. Blame it on weeks of houseguests and only one working w...

April is the Cruelest Month

I was drinking expensive vodka up until the very last minute last night. And, now, no more booze until May. Thanks to all of you who have agreed to be Alcohol-free in April with me. We can do it ! Also, don't forget you only have two more weeks to sign up for the 10% Refund Challenge or the Poor Bastages Who Owe the Taxman Pity Party ! Enter now for the chance to win fabulous (TBD) prizes! Drawings to be held on April 15th. Finally, on a sadder note, after much thought and serious contemplation, I have decided I will be giving up blogging after the 10% Refund Challenge is over. I have enjoyed getting to know all of you, but the mental toll this daily exercise takes is just too much. "I want to see mountains again, mountains Gandalf! And then find somewhere quiet where I can finish my book."

6 Words of Separation

This is what happens when you open your home to wandering bloggers: You start to get tagged for memes ... and then FIVE DAYS LATER realize that you've been tagged. So, Confessions of a Marathon Mom did taggeth me for the 6 Words Memoir Meme ( See ?). The rules are: Sum up my life in six words. No more, no less. The loophole is you can write as many of these six word sentences as you want. Oooh. Fun. No? Thank gawd I don't have to tag 6 people or say my 6 favorite types of cheese or how I'm 6 degrees of separation from Peter Cetera (actually, I'm only 3, which puts me 4 away from, OM-forking-G, CHER!!!!). I seem to be rambling ... so here's (a part of my) life in Six Word Sentences : I, Vicious Unrepentant Bitter Old Queen. Am *way* cooler than I, Claudius . I don't know what that means. Having never actually watched I, Claudius . Someone said it was good though. Someone said I was good too. Of course, then he slept with a long-haired skinny twenty-someth...

Alcohol-Free April Eve

Image
Tonight will be my last opportunity to partake of the fabulous fermented beverages I do so love for an entire month . March was an exercise in Bacchanalian frivolity, and my liver could use the break. Some of you may doubt my resolve, but let me remind you of International Liver Resting Week 2007 , in which VUBOQ did not drink for an entire week ! Not convinced? Although I can not provide a link as this happened during my Diary-X days, after my 35th Birthday Party and resulting 2-day hangover and mysterious gaping wound between my eyebrows, VUBOQ gave up the booze for six months. SIX MONTHS! DURING PRIME AFTERNOON MARGARITA SEASON ! Is that not the epitome of resolve and determination? [And if you doubt the veracity of the above, please contact Tomokito . She witnessed the whole sordid affair.] One month should be a piece of cake. I, of course, am willing to accept Alcohol-Free April Partners , if anyone should so desire to join me in the detoxification process. I (We?) will be eating...
