Timing

Good Morning, Kittens.

Happy Holiday Weekend. I hope you all have Firework Spectacular Plans! I have a pretty full weekend ahead, for sure.

Last night, I met a friend for dinner at Austin Grill (Margaritas!) and a movie. Because the Metro Red Line has become impossible to predict, I was a little early. I must've missed a storm by a few minutes. The ground was all wet and the light was amazing. Pictured is a shot I took on the corner of 8th and F, NW, looking west. I wish I had brought my "real" camera. Some other cameraphone shots are on my flickr page.

After dinner, we had originally planned to see The Country Teacher, a Czech film about a teacher who moves to the countryside. A woman who falls for him, but he falls for her 17-year-old son. Unfortunately, the website lied about the final showing (it was at 7:10 not 9:40. Boo on the website). So, we decided to see Food, INC, a documentary film along the lines of Fast Food Nation. It really didn't present anything new (at least to me); however, it did make me very glad that I don't eat meat and that I try to eat organic and locally-grown food as much as possible.

The movie got out late, so I took the 70 home. What a joy that is.

Today, I have no real plans. I need to go to the store and I'll probably stay home to watch DVDs tonight.

Saturday, Mike Who Bakes Cakes is hosting a BBQ. He's asked me to bring something vegan (What? I can't use the CHEEEEEEEEZ? The Horror!). Weather-permitting, we'll walk from his house to a spot to watch the Fireworks.

Sunday, Eric from Baltimore is coming down for Margaritas and Mayhem. I'm still trying to get a group together for that. If you're in the DC area and want to join, let me know :-)

Have a great weekend! *smooches*

A Slight Glimmer?

Good Morning, Kittens.

Pottery class last night was fun (and productive). I threw two vases. One of which I will keep for my knitting needles ... if they turn out nice. I forgot to take pictures of them though. Bah.

When I got home from pottery, I had a positive email waiting for me. One of my government applications has cleared the HR Bureaucracy and has been sent to the Selecting Official, who will decide who to interview (or not to interview or not to even have any interviews). Since being laid off, I think this is the first -of many- government applications to clear the HR Hurdle. Unfortunately, I don't know anyone in that government office to contact to put in a good word to the Selecting Official for me. Oh, well. My stellar resume will have to speak for itself.

Although my day today will be filled the the drudgery of house-keeping and job-hunting. Tonight, I'm meeting a friend for margaritas and, then, we are going bowling. Fun times.

Have a great day! *smooches*

Catching Up

Good Afternoon, Kittens!

As I said earlier, I met my friend, Patty, yesterday afternoon.

First, we went to Lavantes, a Middle Eastern restaurant south of Dupont Circle for cocktails and appetizers. After lots of catching up, we walked to Straits of Malaya for dinner on their rooftop deck. The food was totally yummy. As we were paying our check, it started to rain. Great timing ... except I only had a small umbrella and we got soaked on the way back to her hotel.

Once back at the hotel, we decided to have a few more cocktails at the hotel bar. The bartender, Joe, was CUTE! (and gay ... I think).

And, then, I came home ... on the bus, because the red line metro has been stopping at Ft. Totten after 10PM. And, it was well after 10PM when we finished.

The bus took forever.

Today, after a ridiculously long metro ride (25 minutes from Silver Spring to Takoma Park ... which is only one station and should only take a few minutes), I met Patty at the Natural History Museum. She did a little souveniring in the gift shop, before we headed over to the African Art Museum. And, then, we decided to lunch at Jaleo. Yum. Jaleo. Sangria. Patatas Bravas. Basque Cake. Mmmmmmm ...

And, that was my adventure. It was super fun reliving old times.

Photo time!

Because I Can't Go Two Mornings in a Row Without Saying ...

Good Morning, Kittens!

A friend of mine, Patty, who worked with me in Japan and I haven't really seen since, is in town. We met up last night for the first time in over 10 years. And, we' re doing the museums today before she heads home to Georgia.

Expect a longer post this afternoon (with Pictures!).

Until then, have a great day!

Weekend Update: Another Star for My Crown in Heaven Edition

Good Morning, Kittens.

As some of you may know, in a former life, I was a high school biology teacher in a rural North Carolina town. The students were, how should I put this, not the brightest or the best behaved. Some days, my supervising teacher, after watching my students leave the class, would come across the hall and say, "you've earned another star for your crown in Heaven today."

On Saturday, Ms. Bluestockingtales and I met my friend, Carolyn, for the Breathe DC Clean Air Walk, a 5K walk around the Tidal Basin. The weather was beautiful and, afterwards, we walked up to Dupont Circle for margaritas at Alero. Yay.

Once home, I took a nice, long nap. Then, SCGB came down for drinks. Yay. Drinks. I spent the rest of the evening getting the house ready for Crazy Neighbor's Going Away Party.

To give you an idea of what I had to deal with for this party, here are a few pictures of things she had been dropping by my door "for the party":

But, the food was good. And some fun neighbors showed up. And I drank too much. So, all in all, despite the pre-party stress, it was pretty durn fun.

A few more party pix:

Meanwhile ...

Good Afternoon, Kittens.

I have almost fully rehydrated (huzzah!), so here's a little bit more on my day yesterday ...

Anne-Marie from Philly came to visit for the day. We met around 10:30 in the morning, and I forced her to run some errands with me (bank and likker store). Then, we wandered over to Adega for wine ... and lunch. The lovely Ms. Bluestockingtales joined us there. The food was yummy. Mmm. Mmm.

Then, we drove back to my place for knitting and Xanadu and Mad Men, Season 1 and martinis and more knitting. Anne-Marie gave Isabella a hand-knit catnip-filled toy (which Isabella LOVES) and she brought me a bottle of Philadelphia-made gin (which I *know* I am going to LOVE ... once I open it). Which may be this weekend.

Time flew by and Anne-Marie had to catch the bus back to Silver Spring. *wah*

Ms. Bluestockingtales and I continued to watch Mad Men. Then, K-Factor and SCGB came down around 8 and we all had ice cream with whipped cream and chocolate sauce. YUM!

Today, I am going over to Heather's for lunch. I've made a chickpea salad of sorts with a mint lime dressing. Then, I will watch more Mad Men and, perhaps, eat more ice cream. One never knows about these things.

Tomorrow, I am participating in the Breathe DC Clean Air Metro Walk with Carolyn and Ms. Bluestockingtales.

Then, on Sunday, I am hosting a party for my crazy neighbor (more on this later). Srsly. Afterwards, I will *need* a drink. Or two. Or twelve.

And, finally, here is PROOF that I did attend the Michael Jackson HIStory Tour in Honolulu, HI on January 3rd, 1997:

And, a little larger:

(Hopefully you can click to embiggen).

While digging through my storage unit to find those pictures, I stumbled across this:

My name in the Kitakyushu, Japan, telephone directory. It's so funny that I ripped out the page and saved it ...

And, a little larger:

Have a great weekend.

Three Little Known Facts About VUBOQ

1. He never had the Iconic Poster of Farrah on his wall.
2. He saw Michael Jackson in concert in Honolulu (HIStory Tour, 1996ish?). JER-MAAAAINE!
3. He had a SuperFunTabulous time with Anne-Marie in Philly and Clio Bluestockingtales.

Details later ... perhaps after the hangover subsides ...

Laundry Time with VUBOQ

Good Morning, Kittens!

We have a special treat for you today! Oh, yes, we do. It's how I do laundry ... just in case any of you ever want to come over and do it for me.

Step 1: Survey the Damage

Step 2: Sort. I make two piles: Colors and Whites. If there are enough Whites for a mostly full load, I do two loads. If not, I take out the essentials (socks, some t-shirts) and throw them in with the Colors, saving all the other Whites for Another Time.

Step 3: Re-load up the laundry basket and carry it over to the Laundry Room.

Step 4: Sprinkle detergent into the machine.

Step 5: Carefully and loosely load to ensure Proper Machine Balance.

Step 6: Set the Temperature (Colors or Whites).

Step 7: Put in the quarters. And wait.

Step 8: Unload. Separate items to be line dried vs. machine dried. My rule is Expensive Jeans and T-Shirts Which Cost More Than $20 = Line Dried

Step 9: Throw everything else into one dryer (and, to save money, cut your dryer sheets in half).

Step 10. When the cycle is finished, immediately fold the clothes and carry home.

Oh, and please note that I have folded my t-shirts in the Correct Manner. Some people, like the Cheating Cheater, fold t-shirts incorrectly by folding them in half. That method causes an unsightly line in the middle of your shirt. Don't do it. Srsly. Or I will laugh at you.

Lots of fun things happening today!
Have a great one.
