My Lunch from Hell

Image
My lunch today consisted of a Slice of Satanic Cheese Pizza and Fallen Angel French Fries . How do I know this? See for yourself: Doomed! We are all doomed! I really don't have enough to do today.

Spreading the Food Love

The SuperFantastic Cuzin sent me a recipe, which I think I am going to attempt to make this weekend. It's for some strange Aussie concoction called slice . When my cuzin first mentioned it, I wondered if it contained the soft drink . It doesn't. Claudia's Mum's Zucchini Slice [Cuzinly comments in italics ] 12oz or 3 medium zucchini, finely chopped 1 large onion, finely chopped 1 cup tasty cheese (firm), shredded (this is the exact wording of the recipe C gave me – she says she uses sharp cheddar) 4 rashers bacon or ham, finely chopped (obviously you would leave this out) 1 C self-raising flour (1C flour, 1 ½ t baking powder, ½ t salt) ½ cup milk 5 eggs, beaten Mix together and pour into buttered slice tin (large casserole dish) . And cook in moderate oven for ~40 min. Mine takes longer to cook – usually at least one hour at about 350. I cook it until it’s set in the middle and a bit browned on top. Easy! Peasy! Right? If you try it, let me know how yours is. I'l...

Rode Hard. Put Up Wet.

Image
That would be how I'm feeling today ... so. very. tired. After work yesterday, I met Kristen and Carolyn, and Kristen's friend/co-worker, Mei, at the Hotel Washingon . The Terrace offers a lovely view of the White House ... upclose, but not upclose to throw things at it. Unfortunately, the restaurant/bar is *veddy* expensive ... and not very good. Paying for the view, not the food/drinks, I suppose. I had two drinks and a greek salad. Around 8ish, the ladies went for dinner at a steakhouse and I headed to College Park for an late evening tryst. Y picked me up at the metro station. We talked for a bit. Suddenly, it was 10:30 and I went to bed. Y studied and said, "I'll probably be coming to bed soon." It wasn't. He did wake me up at some point [possibly around midnight?] for some really hot buttsecks. *rowr* I got up at 6 and left. I had to go home, feed and water the kitty, feed and water the not-yet-dead chili pepper plants, check my mail (and my vacationing ...

"Folks, that's the bottom line: It's government-paid health care," Rep. J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.)

The House has approved the Children's Health Bill , much to the chagrin of House Republicans and our Compassionate Conservative President, who has threatened to veto the Bill. Which raises the interesting and important question of "Why don't Republicans want the poorest children of this country to have adequate medical and dental care?" Our Compassionate President stated his fear: "When you expand eligibility . . . you're really beginning to open up an avenue for people to switch from private insurance to the government." OMG! The private money-grubbing insurance companies will lose business ! Won't someone think of the insurance companies? Thank GOD we have elected officials with giant conglomerates' best interests at heart. The poor kids without insurance, dying of brain infections because they can't afford dental insurance? Well, they're just going to have to fend for themselves. Mr. President, I don't think you need to worry abou...

Romance

In a recent email conversation with the SuperFantastic Cuzin, Vuboq was asked how to bring the romance back into a relationship. Ah. Such an important question. Vuboq, he *hearts* romance. He also stops to think that perhaps he is not dating the most romantic man around. Exhibit A: Vuboq's gifts from Y's month-long trip to Israel: 1) The biggest luffah Vuboq has ever seen (it's a good 2 feet long) and 2) a half-pound of granola (very good, organic, homemade granola). Vuboq needs to investigate this further. Anyway, Vuboq racked his tiny, little brain [remember, Vuboq is pretty, not thinky] and decided that a picnic would be ideal! In a park! Or in the backyard! On a cute red and white checkered blanket. With pita and hummus and olives! Lots of olives! And cheeses! And maybe baba ganouj! And dolmades! And a nice white wine! And, for dessert, watermelon and feta. Mmmm. And right at dusk, lighting some candles and watching the stars come out. *sigh* Vuboq thinks a ...

Storytime

Image
Because VUBOQ's evening was rather uneventful [I did laundry! I drank a Tom Collins! I knitted! I chatted with Y! I talked to friends!], VUBOQ is going to tell you a story: VUBOQ and the Scary Elevator Ride from Hell!! (ooooh) Once upon a time, today in fact, VUBOQ went to work. Here is a bird's eye view of his office building: VUBOQ works on the 6th floor of his SHINY! building: SHINY! but not NEW! (Do you see me waving?) Anyway, on this superhot, sticky, 1 Gabillion degree morning, VUBOQ sloshed into the main lobby, just missing an elevator. VUBOQ hates the rude people who see someone coming into the main lobby but don't hold the elevator doors. So, VUBOQ pressed the UP button and waited. And waited. And waited. After many, many hours, an elevator finally arrived. VUBOQ entered and pressed "6." Up, up, up went the elevator. All the way to the 10th floor. Without stopping on 6. On the 10th floor, the elevator paused and down, down, down went the elevator. All...

For BOSSY

Image
BOSSY has asked for a photo of Y ... and even though I have surreptitiously posted a photo or two of him on da blog, I have not said "This is Y." Let me properly introduce you. Wonderful Readers Who Love and Worship VUBOQ, this is Y: [He will kill me if he ever finds out this is the photo I chose to post.]

My Hands Smell Like Pupusa

Now, for the textual portion of my (and Y's) pupusa-making extravaganza! The pupusas were surprisingly easy to make, once I got the dough to a workable consistency.* The recipe I used is here . As you all know, I have difficulty following a recipe ... but, since this was something new, I did my best to follow it to the letter. Of course, I don't really like cilantro all that much, so I left that out. And, I didn't have any cumin. I could've sworn I had cumin. I always think I have cumin. But, then, when I check my spice cabinet, it is not cumin. It is cardamom, which -so I have come to learn- is *not* the same thing. Thus, instead of cumin, I substituted a liberal sprinkling of garam masala , which has cumin in it (It does!). However, it gave the pupusas a slight, but not unpleasant, Indian flavor. We only stuffed the pupusas with cheese (jalapeno jack). Next time -and there will be a next time because these puppies are so easy to make- I want to stuff them with...

Mi Casa Es Mi Pupuseria

Vini, Vidi, Pupusamaki! [and, yes, I put Y to work. Sometimes one has to sing for their supper, and, other times, they have to help cook]

You Say "Papusas" I Say "Pupusas"

Either way, it's still slang for va-jay-jay in El Salvador (according to an El Salvadoran friend and Urban Dictionary ). Here's the pupusa recipe I'll be following this evening. Stay tuned for exciting photos and text! *smooches*

Weekend Update: Day Late and Dollar Short Edition

*whooooo-wheeeeee* What a weekend, kittens. What. A weekend. Here's the rundown: Friday: After work, I met Kristen and Carolyn at Kristen's hotel for Happy Hour. Then, we walked to Banana Cafe for dinner. However, the wait was too long, so we ended up going to Belga Cafe a few blocks down. It was yummy (if a tad expensive). I had the Salade Roulade (heart of romaine with goat cheese, blue cheese and roasted tomatoes) and some sort of onion tart thing. For dessert, I had the Belgian waffles, which were disappointing - slightly underdone and the chocolate sauce was too tangy (it had raspberry something in it). After dinner, I headed home. I was in the shower when Y came over. We tried to set up my internet, but kept having issues. A long and confusing call to India resolved nothing, so we went to bed ... *heh* Saturday morning, I thought we were going to see The Arab-Israeli Cookbook; however, I had the date wrong. It was on Sunday. Oops. Y and I "lounged aro...

We Have Da Intarnexts!!!11eleven

Blogging from home on my own innarnextes connection, kittens! And having a martini! *woot* [the Verizon guy arrived at 4PM. He wasn't hot ... *sigh*]

Waiting for Godot

At home. Waiting for the Verizon technician. I was giving the amazingly precise window of "between 8AM and 5PM." I called at 1 for something a little more definite and was told "I'll put a note to try to arrive around 2 ... but it might not be until 7." da-huh? He had better be hot.

Frustration

Still no intarnexts at home. Verizon tech is coming out Monday (must take the day off) to see if he can fix it. forkity forkity fork fork.

The Simpsooooooooons

Image
I *so* want to see the movie, but I think I'll wait a few weeks for the madness to die down. In the meantime, here is my Simpsons Avatar. You can make yours at the Simpsons website . Good news, people! Verizon called earlier this morning and my Intartubez is all ready to be hooked up. If all goes according to plan (and how often does that actually happen?), I should be surfing the Wireless Wonderland tonight. Cross your fingers and look for me on AIM this weekend and we can chat about all the goodness in the world. Or just bitch about life. I'm OK with either. *smooches*

Meanwhile ...

Last night, I had a mini-gathering with some of my neighbors, New Upstairs Neighbor, Diagonally Upstairs Neighbor, and Across the Way Neighbor [NUN, DUN, and AWN?]. We ate cheese and crackers and chips and salsa and hummus and pita and drank Tom Collinses and talked and gossiped and had a good time. Y joined us later. I like my neighbors. And I like where I live. And it's times like last night when I think, " y'know, I'm really happy with my life " and just thinking that makes me feel all warm and gooey inside. I guess we are all warm and gooey inside, what with all that blood and soft tissue, so I guess I feel warmer and gooeyer than usual. After the guests left, Y and I went to bed and had much fun sex. Aaaaah. Have I mentioned lately that I am liking him a lot? If not, I am. As for my exciting weekend plans, after work today, I'm meeting Kristen and Carolyn near the Navy Yard for happy hour. Then, we are going to dinner somewhere near Barracks Row. ...

Because I Don't Blog Enough About Booze ...

Last night, after washing, drying, folding, and putting away two loads of laundry, AND making my bed, AND vaccuuming almost the entire rug in the living room (which is an astonishingly huge 5'x8'), Tomoko came down for cheese/crackers and Tom Collinses. Mmm. Tom Collins. My new boyfriend. Prior to my evening of housework, because I was out of gin (well, I still have the super-special Made in Ann Arbor small-batch distilled Leopold's gin, but that is *only* for super-special occasions, like ... um ... I'm Out of Money to Buy More Gin Day or I Planted a Gabillion Chili Pepper Plants and Every Single One of Them Has Died Day (which just so happens to be right around the corner ) or even I've Been Dating Y for 3 Months Today Day (August 15th, which *is* right around the corner , practically)), I stopped by the likker store on the way home. I bought gin and vodka. I want to make more delicious infused vodka. However, and this is where reader participation comes...

Hogwarts Homosexuality Shocker!

Image
I have just made a shocking realization: Not one of the teachers mentioned in the *entire* Harry Potter series was married! Not a one. My new theory is that the Ministry of Magic punished teh Gayz by sending them to remote/isolated schools to teach. Thus, removing them from greater society ... ... But giving them a freakish amount of control over future generations [Hey, no one ever said the Ministry of Magic comes up with *good* ideas]. No wonder Snape had such a fascination with Harry.

Two Things VUBOQs Hate

1. Being out of gin (except for the super-special small batch Leopold's gin purchased in lovely Ann Arbor, which is only for super-special occasions and "woo hoo it's Tuesday" doesn't really count as special ). Seems like a trip to the likker store is in order. 2. Fishing the last few potato chips from the bottom of the big bag (but VUBOQs do this because they are craving potato chips). In other news ... Here's an excerpt from my IM conversation with Y this morning. I thought it was funny: Y : sorry i missed ur call last night VUBOQ : that's ok. Y : i left my phone on vibrate , and forgot to sit on it VUBOQ : i just cried myself to sleep b/c i couldn't talk to you before bed Y : u sure ur not jewish?? *yawn* I could use a nap.
